Lesson: Psychology and Business Strategy

Module 4: Designing & Setting Up Your Airbnb

In short

In a short-term rental, interior design is applied psychology: guests form a visual impression of a listing in a fraction of a second, and one weak photo can drag down the whole set. Every design dollar should help the right guest stop scrolling, book and leave a five-star review. That means designing for your real guest, creating at least one standout feature, and spending most where guests look and touch.

Questions people ask

How quickly do guests judge an Airbnb listing?

Very quickly. Research on websites found people form a visual impression in about 50 milliseconds, and listing photos are judged in a similar snap way.

Where should I spend money when furnishing an Airbnb?

On what shows in photos and what guests touch most, such as beds, the lounge, the dining setting and your standout feature. Small décor and rooms that aren't photographed are better places to save.

Is cheap furniture a false economy for an Airbnb?

Often, yes. Furniture that looks flimsy photographs as cheap, signals that the host doesn't care and tends to need replacing sooner, so durable pieces usually cost less over time.
