Why Cobram And Barooga Suit A Group Golf Weekend

Cobram in Victoria and Barooga in New South Wales face each other across the Murray, joined by a bridge and a shared golf club. Ulupna sits downstream to the west on the Victorian side, among river red gums, paddocks and the sandy beaches of Ulupna Island. From the river at Ulupna, Strathmerton is about 12 minutes by car, Cobram about 19 and Tocumwal about 23. That puts two 36-hole golf clubs, several club bistros and every supply run inside a comfortable half-hour.

The appeal for a group is the mix. The golf is serious, with Cobram Barooga's courses listed among Australia's top 100, but the weekend does not have to be only golf. The same stretch of highway has a family cellar door at Katunga, Australia's largest cactus garden at Strathmerton, a strawberry farm at Koonoomoo, a monthly market in Cobram and a country pub with a Sunday pizza night.

Spring is a good time to go. Late September to November brings longer evenings for a back nine, the cactus garden's peak flowering and, for groups coming up from Melbourne, the Melbourne Cup long weekend, with Cup Day on Tuesday 3 November 2026. It is also before the full heat of a Murray summer.

Cobram Barooga Golf Club: Two Courses, One Clubhouse

Cobram Barooga Golf Club is at 10-16 Burkinshaw Street, Barooga, on the corner of Golf Course Road, just over the bridge from Cobram. The Old Course dates from 1925 and, according to Golf On The Murray, measures 6,186 metres with narrow, tree-lined fairways framed by red gums and pines. The West Course is listed at 6,287 metres, with wider fairways and larger greens in what the same source calls a blend of resort and modern links style. The club notes the Old Course's place in Golf Australia magazine's and The Golf Course Guide's top 100 lists, and the club has hosted the TPS Murray River event on the PGA Tour of Australasia.

For a mixed-ability group, that pairing is useful. Stronger players tend to enjoy the precision of the Old Course, while the West Course is kinder to the occasional golfer. With 36 holes you can also play one of each across the weekend without repeating yourself.

The clubhouse has a pro shop, bistro, café, breakfast service, four indoor golf simulators and a mini golf course, so non-golfers can meet the players for lunch without feeling like spectators.

Green Fees, Carts And Hire At Cobram Barooga

When we checked the club's prices page in September 2026, it listed these visitor green fees for summer, autumn and spring. The page shows them as effective from 1 May 2023, so confirm before you go.

Motorised carts were listed at $35 for 9 holes and $60 for 18, pull buggies at $5, and a full adult set of hire clubs at $10 for 9 holes or $20 for 18. The club also states that since 1 July 2024 only its own motorised carts and privately owned carts displaying a valid club registration sticker are permitted, so do not plan on bringing your own cart.

As an illustrative budget for a group of twelve playing 18 holes on a Saturday, the listed green fees come to $780 before carts. Weekday rounds are $10 a head cheaper, which is worth knowing if the group can take a Friday or Monday off.

Booking Tee Times For Eight, Twelve Or More

Golf is played in groups of up to four, so twelve players need three consecutive tee times, and on a busy Saturday those go early. Book as soon as your dates are firm, then ring the pro shop to line up the times and carts. If the group mixes keen and social players, put the keen ones on the Old Course and the relaxed four on the West at about the same time so everyone finishes together.

Check the club calendar first. When we looked, Cobram Barooga Golf Club listed a Community Health Charity Golf Day on Tuesday 6 October 2026 and its Melbourne Cup Tournament from Saturday 31 October to Tuesday 3 November 2026. Competition days can reduce visitor tee times, so ask how your preferred day is affected. Experienced golfers might also ask whether visitors can enter.

Club Tocumwal: Another 36 Holes Upstream

For a three- or four-night stay, or if Barooga is booked out, Club Tocumwal on Barooga Road, Tocumwal is the second big option, about 23 minutes from Ulupna. It has two 18-hole championship courses, the Presidents and the Captains, which according to Golf On The Murray can be combined into up to six different course combinations. The club is regularly voted among Australia's top 100 public-access courses.

Golf On The Murray listed an 18-hole green fee of $63 and cart hire of $60 when we checked, plus a driving range and equipment hire. The club's dining page says its bistro serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days and that Café 37 is open daily. Clubhouse 03 5874 9111, pro shop 03 5874 9172.

A good long-weekend pattern is one round at each club: Barooga on the first full day, then Tocumwal on the second, with lunch at the Tocumwal clubhouse before a slow drive back along the river.

Mini Golf And Simulators For The Non-Golfers

Every golf weekend includes a few people who came for the company. Cobram Barooga Golf Club describes its mini golf course as world class; it hosted the Australian Mini Golf Open in 2022 and the Oceania Mini Golf Open in 2023. Golf On The Murray lists it as Sporties Mini Golf, alongside four indoor golf simulators known as The Bunker, opened in 2021.

That helps a group in three ways. Teenagers who are not ready for 18 holes can play mini golf while the adults are out. Non-playing partners can run their own competition and still meet everyone for lunch. And if a spring storm rolls through, the simulators keep the golfers busy indoors. We could not find current prices online, so ring the clubhouse on 03 5873 4448 to check prices and whether to book simulator bays.

The Railway Hotel, Strathmerton: The Closest Pub Meal

For twelve people, the simplest plan is one or two meals out and the rest at the house. Country kitchens close earlier than city ones, often around 8pm to 8:30pm, so book group tables when you book the golf.

At about 12 minutes from Ulupna, the Railway Hotel on Main Street, Strathmerton (The Strathy) is the nearest pub dinner and the easiest drive home. Its website describes a classic country pub menu of shared starters, burgers, steaks, ribs, schnitzels, parmas and seafood, with specials, vegetarian dishes, a kids menu and a separate pizza menu. When we checked in September 2026, it listed these meal times:

That suits a Friday arrival dinner or a Sunday pizza night when nobody wants to cook. Ring (03) 5874 5203 to book a group table, and check the hours around public holidays.

Cobram Hotel And Sporties: Bistro Dinners In Town

For the big night out, the Cobram Hotel sits on the corner of Station and Main Streets, opposite the Cobram visitor information centre. Its dining page listed bistro hours of 11:30am to 2:30pm and 5:30pm to 8:30pm Sunday to Thursday, closing at 9pm on Friday and Saturday, with a snack menu between. The page also mentions a new menu and bistro opening soon, so check the current arrangements when you ring (03) 5872 1015.

Across the bridge, the Sporties bistro at Cobram Barooga Golf Club is the obvious post-round meal. The club lists the venue as open from 7am daily until 11pm Sunday to Thursday, midnight on Friday and 1am on Saturday. Those are venue hours rather than kitchen hours, so ask about food service when you book. Breakfast, lunch and dinner under one roof make a golf day easy to run.

Courtesy Buses And Getting Home To Ulupna

This is the part most groups get wrong. The golf club's courtesy bus page lists pick-ups in Cobram from 5:30pm and Barooga from 5:45pm, roughly hourly, bookable on 03 5873 4448. The Cobram Hotel's door-to-door bus runs Thursday 6pm to midnight, Friday and Saturday 5pm to midnight and Sunday 4pm to 9pm, free for members and $5 for non-members.

Neither lists rural Ulupna as a pick-up area; the golf club names Cobram and Barooga only. Country roads are dark and kangaroos are active around dusk, so plan on getting yourselves home.

• Agree on sober drivers before the trip, and rotate the job between nights.
• Choose the Railway Hotel in Strathmerton, the closest venue, for the night the group plans a bigger drink.
• Keep one dinner at the house, with the fire pit, when nobody needs the car keys.

Coffee, Breakfast And Strawberries On The Way To Golf

Twelve coffees before an early tee time need some planning. In Cobram, The Corner Shop Gelato and Espresso Bar at 2 Mookarii Street is listed by Visit Victoria as open 7am to 5pm Tuesday to Friday, 7am to 3pm Saturday and 8am to 3pm Sunday. Phone a big order through on 0448 856 089. On a round day, the golf club's café and breakfast service is the simplest option.

On a non-golf morning, The Big Strawberry at Koonoomoo, between Strathmerton and Cobram, says it is open 8am to 4:45pm every day, with a licensed family café serving light meals, pancakes and strawberry desserts, plus strawberry wine, jams and chutneys. Pick-your-own is seasonal, so check its website for current picking before promising anyone a punnet.

Monichino Wines: A Family Cellar Door At Katunga

The closest well-known cellar door to Ulupna is Monichino Wines at 70 Berrys Road, Katunga, south of Strathmerton towards Numurkah. The Monichino family has made wine here since the 1960s, and it makes an easy afternoon for the non-golfers or a Sunday stop for everyone on the way home.

Monichino's own contact page lists the cellar door as open Saturday and Sunday, 11am to 4pm, and by appointment Wednesday to Friday (Terry 0409 147 158 or Anna 0438 646 578; main number 03 5864 6452). Other listings show different hours, so go by the winery's page and call ahead. Twelve people turning up unannounced is hard on a small family cellar door.

Plan the visit around your drivers, or keep it to a short stop and buy bottles to open on the verandah later. Wine lovers wanting a full day of cellar doors can do a day trip to Rutherglen, but that is well over an hour each way.

Cactus Country In Spring Flower: One Outing For Everyone

For one shared outing that is not golf, Cactus Country at 4986 Murray Valley Highway, Strathmerton, is close by. It calls itself Australia's largest cactus garden: 12 acres of trails through cacti and succulents, with a bar and restaurant on site. The timing suits this season, because the garden's FAQ says the most blooms usually appear in October and November.

Nobody has to be good at anything here. Walk at your own pace, meet at the bar and be back at the river by mid-afternoon. It is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, so a Cup weekend group should go on the Saturday or Sunday. Phone 0427 745 271 about group visits.

Stocking The Kitchen For Twelve

With most meals at the house, the first supply run matters. Cobram is the main shopping town, with a Woolworths on Punt Road; check trading hours before relying on a late-arrival shop. Strathmerton is closer for top-ups, but do the big shop in Cobram on the way in.

Markets make a good Saturday job for the non-golfers. Moira Shire's 2026 market calendar lists the Cobram Lions Log Cabin Market on the last Saturday of the month at Federation Park, Punt Road, 8am to 1pm (26 September, 31 October and 28 November 2026), and the Numurkah Lions Market on Saturday 17 October, 8am to 12pm. The council also promotes a Murray Farm Gate Trail of cheeses, wines, olives, fruit, beef and preserves; download the current brochure from the Moira Shire website.

The Bob's River House listing says linen, towels, toiletries and basic kitchen supplies such as salt, pepper and oil are provided. A sensible golf-weekend list covers:

• Two big breakfasts and plenty of coffee and milk.
• One barbecue dinner: sausages, steaks, salads and bread.
• One slow dinner that can sit in the oven while the group is out.
• Water, ice and soft drinks for drivers and golfers.

Why Bob's River House Suits A Group Golf Weekend

Most golf-trip accommodation around Cobram means motel rooms or resort units, which split the group up once the round finishes. Bob's River House at Ulupna keeps everyone together on about 6.5 hectares with absolute Murray River frontage and direct river access: a main house plus a separate unit, four bedrooms and three bathrooms, comfortably sleeping 12.

The practical details suit a golf group. Free on-site parking fits up to 12 cars, so golf bags can stay in the boots, and self check-in makes a Friday-night arrival easy. In the evenings, the river-facing verandah has elevated water views, a BBQ and outdoor dining for 12, and near the river there is a fire pit with a waterside picnic table for up to 8. Inside, the open-plan lounge has a wood fire, two leather couches, a book nook and a 75-inch Smart TV with Prime Video, plus heating and cooling throughout. The kitchen has an oven, cooktop, microwave, fridge, freezer and coffee machine, with indoor dining for 8 and another 4 in the unit.

Two laundries help after a wet round, and there is a high-speed Wi-Fi plan. Two notes from the listing: the jetty is not currently available for guest use, and the outdoor areas are not fenced, so keep an eye on children and dogs near the water.

Sleeping Twelve Golfers: How The Rooms Split Up

Big groups usually include someone who snores, someone up at 5:30am and a few who stay by the fire pit until late. Having two buildings helps.

According to the listing, the main house has two queen bedrooms and a bunk room with two bunks, each a double on the bottom and a single on top, all on one level. It has two bathrooms: one with a large shower and a cast-iron bath, the other with an open walk-in shower. The separate unit has a queen bed, a pull-out sofa bed sleeping two, an ensuite, an adjoining toilet, its own laundry, dining for four and a 50-inch TV.

• The unit: the early starters, or the couple who want the quietest nights.
• The main-house queens: the organiser and the next morning's drivers.
• The bunk room: younger players or friends happy to share.

A 48-Hour Golf Weekend Itinerary From Ulupna

Friday Evening: Arrive, Shop, Settle

Do the big shop in Cobram on the way in. If you reach Strathmerton before 8pm, the Railway Hotel is 12 minutes from the house; otherwise light the fire pit, cook on the BBQ and sort out bedrooms, tee times and drivers.

Saturday Morning: Eighteen Holes At Barooga

Golfers play the Old or West Course. Non-golfers try mini golf, a Cobram coffee run or, on the last Saturday of the month, the Cobram Lions Log Cabin Market. Everyone meets at the clubhouse for lunch.

Saturday Afternoon: River Time Or Cactus Country

Rest by the river, or visit Cactus Country for the spring flowering (open until 5pm). Keep it light, because the evening is the big one.

Saturday Night: The Booked Dinner

Your table at the Cobram Hotel, Sporties or the Railway Hotel, with drivers agreed. Or cook a big dinner at home and finish around the fire pit.

Sunday: Second Round Or Cellar Door

Keen golfers play Club Tocumwal and lunch at the bistro. Everyone else has a slow breakfast, then visits Monichino Wines when the cellar door opens at 11am, or The Big Strawberry. Staying a third night? The Railway Hotel's Sunday pizza session makes an easy dinner.

What To Pack For A Golf Weekend On The Murray

Spring on the Murray can bring a warm round one day and a cold, windy one the next. Pack a light rain jacket, a warm layer, sunscreen, a hat and a water bottle, plus spare balls for the tree-lined Old Course.

For the house, bring your own coffee, food for any dietary needs and torches for the walk to the fire pit after dark, as the grounds are open and unfenced. Insect repellent helps on still evenings by the river. Before lighting the fire pit, check the CFA fire danger rating and any restrictions for the day, as they change through spring.
